There is just one week left for builders, designers and homeowners in Brampton to make applications under the old system before the new Ontario Building Code begins.

The building code regulates the minimum construction standards in the Province of Ontario by creating uniformity. It can affect large high-rise developments to small additions made to homes.

The new standards have been designed to address evolving needs in the construction industry and to streamline the process. There will be a focus on sustainability and safety with an eye to cutting through red tape to allow the industry to meet growth demands.

Overall, more than 200 changes have been made to the code which was last updated in 2012.

To ease into the new rules and regulations, the City of Brampton is allowing a transition period that will allow permit applications to continue under the 2012 Ontario Building Code until March 31, 2025,
