Fascism Expert Issues Warning As He Leaves US for Canada [Video]

Yale University Professor Jason Stanley, a leading expert on fascism, has said he is taking up a new job in Canada because he wants to “raise my kids in a country that is not titling toward a fascist dictatorship.”

Newsweek contacted Professor Stanley for comment via email outside of regular office hours.

Why It Matters

During the 2024 presidential election campaign, both Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and the eventual Republican winner Donald Trump suggested the other represented a direct threat to American democracy. In an interview with radio host Charlamagne Tha God during the election campaign, Harris said she thought Trump’s platform could be described as “fascism.”

A poll of 1,143 adults conducted by The Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research in July 2024 found 59 percent of American voters believed democracy could be in danger depending on who won that November’s presidential election.
