As the world gets more hectic and stressful, studies show many people are losing sleep in Canada.

Insufficient sleep duration, defined as sleeping less than seven hours per night in adults aged 18 years or older, is a recognized public health issue in Canada, according to the Canadian Sleep Society. The most recent data from 2020 indicate that 17.2 per cent of Canadian adults report sleeping less than seven hours per night, the society said.

“There is a sleep crisis in this country,” Amanda Jewson, a registered social worker and sleep therapist told INsauga.com. “One in three Canadians say they’re tired. One in four children do not get the recommended 10 to 12 hours of overnight sleep.”

Sleep duration has decreased over time, and in the last 10 to 15 years insomnia prevalence has increased by almost five per cent, said Dr. Armin Rahmani, a sleep medicine and psychiatry practitioner …
