Mississauga city officials suggest residents prepare for possible power outages and unsafe travel ahead of the freezing rain storm this weekend.

The spring ice storm could bring three to five millimetres of ice accretion to the GTA, according to a statement from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The freezing rain and ice build-up could start Friday evening and continue to around noon on Sunday.

The ice build-up could lead to power outages, wet and slippery roads and sidewalks, and the potential for broken tree branches, the City of Mississauga said in a press release.

“This type of weather can be difficult to track and can be unpredictable, so it is best to be prepared,” the city said. “Check the weather forecast often if you are planning to travel this weekend.”

City crews are actively monitoring road conditions and working to clear road debris and storm drains.
