A weekend of rain – freezing or otherwise – is expected to bring “significant” precipitation to Durham Region and lead to potential flooding and “dangerous conditions” along river banks, according to the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority.

The Ministry of Natural Resources is tracking a slow-moving low-pressure system set to move into the region’s watershed Friday through Sunday, with precipitation totals of 20-60 mm.

Stream flows have been slowly declining over the past week and are near seasonal levels, but this weekend’s combined precipitation, frozen ground conditions and associated snowmelt will result in increased runoff, leading to higher than normal water levels and flows in local streams.

Widespread flooding is not anticipated but fast flowing water and flooding of low-lying areas and roadways may be expected in some areas.
