New tariffs anticipated to drive up prices across Connecticut [Video]

CROMWELL, CT (WFSB) – New tariffs were expected to be announced on Wednesday afternoon, and families braced for how the changes could affect their wallets.

Gov. Ned Lamont planned to meet with local business owners in Hartford on Wednesday to discuss the potential impact of the tariffs.

The meeting was scheduled to take place at Grocery on Broad at 11 a.m., where business leaders were likely to voice concerns about how the changes could affect Connecticut’s economy and their operations.

Many everyday items, such as fruits and vegetables, have been imported from countries such as Mexico, Canada, China, and others. They will be subject to the new tariffs.

While the specifics of the tariffs had not been fully disclosed, an estimate from the Budget Lab at Yale University suggested a 20 percent universal tariff could cost the average household an additional $3,400 to $4,200 annually.
