Two weather alerts are in effect in the Greater Toronto Area on Wednesday.

The first is the rainfall warning, which could bring 30 to 50 mm, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The ground, already near saturation, has little ability to absorb further rainfall, the warning states.

The rain begins Wednesday morning over extreme southwestern Ontario before reaching the Golden Horseshoe this afternoon. It will continue through to early Thursday morning.

With thunderstorms expected, rainfall amounts may exceed 50 mm over some areas, particularly over southwestern Ontario. Rain will end from west to east overnight into early Thursday morning.

The second alert is for a special weather statement for a brief period of freezing rain is possible Wednesday morning or afternoon.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy, slippery and hazardous.

For locations near Lake Ontario, temperatures will likely remain above the freezing mark. …
