Sen. Susan Collins defies GOP, backs resolution to block Trump’s tariffs on Canada, citing harm to Maine’s economy.

WASHINGTON D.C., DC — U.S. Sen. Susan Collins broke ranks with Republican leadership Wednesday, backing a Democratic-led resolution that would block President Donald Trump’s emergency declaration enabling tariffs on Canadian imports.

In a Senate floor speech, the Maine Republican called the tariffs “harmful and unjustified,” warning they would hit Maine’s economy especially hard — from energy to agriculture to manufacturing.

“The Maine economy is integrated with Canada, our most important trading partner,” Collins said. “Tariffs on Canada would be detrimental to many Maine families and our local economies.”
