Ontario Tech University is creating three new bursaries for students whose parents work in the auto industry as Oshawa and Durham Region prepare for fallout from the 25 per cent tariffs on non-American cars and trucks being imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

General Motors has not yet announced any temporary plant closure or layoffs for its 3,000-plus unionized employees, but with workers at the Stellantis assembly plant in Windsor told production will shut down for two weeks, beginning Monday, it may be just a matter of time.

The dominoes started falling in Windsor in the immediate aftermath of Trump’s tariff war, with Unifor Local 444 declaring on their socials the “primary driver” behind the decision was Trump and his 25 per cent tariffs on foreign-made vehicles.
