Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre’s cross-country election campaign is coming to Brampton with a pledge to cut down on crime.

Poilievre will be in Brampton on Wednesday for a rally dubbed “Stop the Crime.”

Poilievre has proposed “jail not bail” and a three-year minimum sentence for repeated auto-theft offences, and suspend eligibility for house arrest for those convicted of vehicle theft if the Conservatives win the April 28 election.

He’s also promised new laws that would mean life sentences for anyone convicted of four or more counts of human trafficking, importing and exporting illegal firearms, and fentanyl trafficking.

But legislation from the previous Conservative government, specifically around mandatory minimum sentencing, has been challenged and in some cases overturned by the Supreme Court of Canada.
