Many municipalities use red light cameras in Ontario and if you’ve never received a ticket — or perhaps have come close to getting one — you may have wondered how much the fine is.

Red light cameras work to detect when a vehicle enters an intersection after the light has turned red, the Region of Peel website notes.

“They are connected to the traffic light and to sensors that are installed just before the stop line,” the region says.

“The system constantly monitors the traffic light, and the camera takes a picture of any vehicle that does not stop at the red light.”

The cameras also work to detect if a vehicle does not come to a complete stop at a red light before turning right.

How much you could expect to pay

If a driver is caught by one of the cameras, the fine is quite expensive.
