Fire in Ontario encampment leaves 1 dead [Video]

Officials said one person was found dead within a burnt RV following the fire Wednesday morning.

ONTARIO, Ore. — One person was found dead Wednesday following a fatal fire in Ontario. 

The Malheur County Sherriff’s Office (MCSO) said a fire broke out around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday in an encampment area known as the Flats.

MCSO responded to the call alongside fire and medical personnel. Ontario Fire and Rescue arrived to the Flats at 8:21 a.m. Wednesday and immediately began to work the fire, per Sheriff Travis Johnson. Crews found one person dead inside an RV once they were able to extinguish the flames. 

Authorities are now working to identify the victim. The sheriff’s office will be working with the Oregon State Fire Marshal in investigating the fatal fire. 

The Flats, a collection of privately owned properties, has been a known problem for MCSO, according to its news release.
