Signs showing support for Canada won’t be allowed in Brampton [Video]

Brampton city councillors have rejected a proposal to permit “Stand for Canada” signs on lawns and in front of businesses; instead, they are encouraging people to fly the Canadian flag.

A city committee voted down the recommendation over fears it would open the floodgates and lead to an expansion of other signs.

Currently, Brampton tightly controls the use of signs because of what has been termed “sign litter” that dots the landscape, many of which contravene local bylaws.

Politicians say they constantly receive complaints about the proliferation of election and real estate signs, and ones that promote businesses.

A report presented to the committee suggested the Stand for Canada signs be exempt from the controls due to the city’s leading advocacy to protect local interests in the face of U.S.-imposed tariffs.
