Scammers are once again adapting their tactics to target Ontario residents, with new schemes emerging through group texts, fake job offers, fraudulent utility notices and impersonations of trusted companies and government agencies.
Fraudsters are targeting Ontario residents through group text messages, adding multiple phone numbers to create a false sense of urgency and legitimacy.
In one example, a scammer posing as “Mary” claims to recruit remote, part-time workers for flexible work-from-home jobs, promising earnings between $230 and $1,700 Canadian dollars per hour.
Recipients are directed to click a WhatsApp link, exposing them to further risks including identity theft and financial loss.
These scams often escalate by requesting personal information or convincing victims to install malicious apps.
What you should do:
- Block and delete suspicious group messages.
- Never click links or share personal details.
- Report suspicious texts to your mobile provider and the CAFC.
