A woman who worked as a Girl Guides of Canada leader and youth hockey coach is facing historic sexual assault charges.

Today, York Regional Police announced that 64-year-old Georgina woman Karen Spence was charged earlier this month with a historic sexual assault that allegedly took place over 20 years ago.

Police say an investigation into the allegations began in March when the victim told officers she was sexually assaulted by the accused between January 1998 and September 2002, when she was under 16 years of age. Police say the accused worked as a Girl Guides leader in the Georgina area from 1995 to 2001, where she held roles as a sparks leader and a pathfinders leader. She also served as a youth hockey coach and referee.
