On Monday, May 5, recognized as MMIP Day, a vigil and justice walk will begin at 8 a.m. on the Idaho Capitol steps.

BOISE, Idaho — The Indigenous Idaho Alliance is hosting an event to honor Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) in Boise this weekend. The event is free and open to the public.

According to the Department of Justice, “American Indian and Alaska Native communities have struggled for decades with violent crime rates that are higher than the national average.” 

Statistics show approximately 1,500 American Native and Alaska Native missing persons have been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) throughout the U.S., and approximately 2,700 cases of murder and nonnegligent homicide offenses have been reported to the Federal Government’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program. The Bureau of Indian Affairs estimates there are approximately 4,200 missing and murdered cases that have gone unsolved.
