LAC DU FLAMBEAU, Wis. (WSAW) – The CDC says murder is the third leading cause of death for indigenous women. More than 84 percent have experienced violence.

The fear is that those numbers could be higher because of under-reporting.

Monday is Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Day and the Lac du Flambeau Tribe is again raising awareness of the issue.

Events like this are important because they raise awareness for indigenous women who are missing or murdered. The event is just one step to fixing that issue.

The Lac du Flambeau Tribal Police Department is continuing to seek information about the disappearance of 37-year-old Melissa Beson of Lac du Flambeau. She was last seen on Monday, March 17.

From the sound of drums, to walking in unison, people at the Awareness Walk for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women are there for one reason: to end this nationwide epidemic.
