Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney is preparing to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday.
The meeting comes at a tense time for U.S.-Canadian relations after Trump’s tariffs and his repeated comments about making its northern neighbor its 51st state.
“We are meeting as heads of our government,” Carney said. “I am not pretending those discussions will be easy.”
However, on Monday, Trump appeared to be baffled by why the newly elected Canadian Prime Minister wanted to meet with him, telling reporters, “I’m not sure what he wants to see me about. But I guess he wants to make a deal.”
