CLOSURE: 16 Beer Store locations set to shut down soon in Ontario [Video]

The Beer Store announced this week that it will be closing 11 more stores in July.

It followed an announcement last month where the company said it would be closing five stores in June.

The decisions come amid the expanded alcohol marketplace in Ontario.

Last year, thousands of convenience stores, as well as additional grocery stores, were permitted to start selling booze, except for spirits.

The changes expanded Ontario’s alcohol market well beyond the two main stores where consumers were previously able to purchase booze: The Beer Store and the LCBO.

Several Beer Store locations have shut down since, with the union representing workers blaming it on the change.

“The Beer Store is modernizing operations to meet the needs of marketplace – this means making the difficult decision to close some stores,” vice president of retail Ozzie Ahmed said in this week’s news release.

Closures are set to happen in various parts of Ontario.
