Early signs show a busy tourist season for Alaska | Local & State News [Video]

Downtown Anchorage is already bustling with tourists, both domestic and international. While there are some signs that foreign travel to the Lower 48 may be slowing down this season, Alaska seems to be the exception. Visit Anchorage says international visitors, especially those from Canada, are still making the trip.

“The very, very early indication we’ve seen through our airport survey hasn’t seen any softening in Canadian demand,” said Jack Bonney with Visit Anchorage. “We have a new flight connecting us to Calgary this year, so it’ll be really interesting to see if that flight fills the way they anticipate it would.”

Another concern has been the pocketbook, and whether that would have any effect on visitors coming to Alaska.

“Any time people are concerned about their bank account, their savings, 401K investments — that usually makes them more hesitant to travel,” Bonney said. “So far, we haven’t seen that on …
