Organized crime is using technology and “gaps in legislation” to strengthen its hold in Mississauga, Brampton and other Canadian communities, says Peel’s police chief as he pushes the federal government for more help to protect public safety.

Bail reform, firearms trafficking, organized auto theft and modernized border enforcement are among “critical public safety challenges” that need greater attention from Ottawa, Peel Regional Police brass and other police officials said in a letter to politicians in the nation’s capital.

The letter from the Peel Police Service Board and Peel police was sent to Prime Minister Mark Carney and key members of his cabinet. It highlights a “need for greater federal coordination” in the face of threats to public safety posed by organized criminals, a bail system police say isn’t working and border enforcement efforts that need to be enhanced.
