Most people oppose the new spa development at Ontario Place, a INsauga.com poll found.

The project has been controversial since the Ford government signed a lease agreement with Austrian-based luxury spa company Therme in 2022. The 95-year agreement allows the private company to build a 65,000 square metre, seven-storey indoor private wellness facility and water park on the West Island of Ontario Place.

Opened in 1971, Ontario Place was a theme park built on public land that operated until 2012.

While there has long been vocal opposition to the spa, new information discovered this spring sparked more outrage. In April, a New York Times investigation found Therme “misrepresented itself, misleading the Ontario government and exaggerating its experience in its bid to secure the Toronto deal.”

As the development continues, many people oppose the project.
