A smoke advisory is in effect for eastern Nebraska Tuesday afternoon through the late evening as Canadian wildfires bring smoke to the Midwest.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Environment and Energy are forecasting the air-quality index around the state to be unhealthy for sensitive groups.
As of Tuesday morning air quality monitors around Omaha and Lincoln are indicating moderate to unhealthy levels for sensitive groups.
Those with heart or lung disease, older adults and children may experience health effects and are advised to reduce prolonged or heavy exertion and avoid intense outdoor activities.
Air quality monitors in Columbus, Fremont, Norfolk, Tekamah and northern Lancaster County are indicating unhealthy levels.
During unhealthy conditions the general public could also experience health effects. DHHS advises everyone to avoid prolonged or heavy exertion during unhealthy conditions and for sensitive groups to move indoors.
