A dangerous TikTok trend is circulating in Ontario.

Ontario students are taking part in a pair of dangerous TikTok trends that pose a risk of electrical shock, burns or even fires, putting students and others in immediate harm, the Electrical Safety Authority said in a press release.

Youth are challenging each other to stick a paper clip in an electrical outlet and drop a coin on it to cause sparks, the Authority said.

There is no such thing as a safe shock, the organization added. Even low-voltage shocks can have serious long-term aftereffects, like memory loss, anxiety and pins and needles.

“Electricity is unforgiving, and a social media challenge is not worth the risk,” the Electrical Safety Authority said.

Every year in Ontario 110 kids under 15 go to the hospital because of an electrical injury. More than half of these kids are under the age of five, but all electrical injuries are preventable.
