A special air quality statement is now in effect until Friday afternoon in southern Ontario.

Smoke from wildfires burning in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta prompted Environment and Climate Change Canada to issue air quality warnings or statements for much of Ontario this week.

The statement was extended to Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto, Oshawa and Hamilton on Thursday with wildfire smoke expected over the area into Friday morning. That has now been extended into Friday afternoon, an updated statement said on Friday.

But the smoke could hang around for much longer.

“Wildfire smoke may remain in place for the next several days for many areas,” Environment Canada said on X Friday morning.

As smoke levels increase, health risks increase, the statement said. Limit time outdoors. Consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.

Mild and common symptoms of poor air quality include eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough. More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe …
