The Maine Department of Environmental Protection warns that unhealthy conditions may persist through the weekend.

MAINE, USA — Smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to impact air quality in parts of Maine, with state officials warning that unhealthy conditions may persist through the weekend.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection said in an alert that particle pollution levels in northern Maine are expected to remain in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” range on Saturday and Sunday. Light winds will likely prevent the smoke from clearing quickly, keeping air quality elevated in the region, according to the DEP. 

Other parts of the state are forecast to remain in the “moderate” range for particle pollution, with air quality conditions varying by location. Ozone levels are expected to be in the “moderate” range in Maine’s southwest and midcoast regions on Saturday, and “good” statewide on Sunday.
