Over 40 Toronto nurses to lose their jobs amid restructuring, report says [Video]

Over 40 registered nurses are at risk of having their jobs cut from several Toronto-area hospitals.

According to a report from the Ontario Nurses Association (ONA), the University Health Network (UHN) is cutting these jobs to restructure several units across both Toronto General and Toronto Western Hospitals.

As a result, representatives within the ONA are calling out the UHN for the harms this restructuring may bring, amidst an ongoing provincial nursing shortage.

“These cuts will be catastrophic for patients. At a time when we desperately need more registered nurses, not fewer, UHN has made the decision to cut the expert care provided by front-line RNs,” says Erin Ariss, ONA Provincial President, in an official statement.

According to numbers from the ONA, Ontario currently has the lowest number of registered nurses (RNs) per capita in the country, requiring an additional 25,000 RNs just to reach the national average.
