‘A little bit lazy’ Canada must find new markets because of U.S. tariffs, says Brampton mayor [Video]

Geography has made Canada too dependent on the U.S. for business and it now must turn to global markets, says Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown.

Speaking at a news conference to present the city’s plan to combat tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, Brown said Canada has become reliant on America while the rest of the world provides untapped markets.

“We have access to many markets around the world,” said Brown. “I think that just because of geography we have been a little bit lazy depending on the U.S. Free Trade Agreement. Now is the time to step up, to be resilient and to be innovative, to think outside the box, and target those new markets.”

Originally signed in 1988, the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement eliminated tariffs on a wide range of goods and services between the countries.
