Automotive manufacturing is among the sectors likely to feel the effects of tariffs imposed by Canada, Mexico.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — An escalating trade war involving tariffs on imported and exported goods will have a significant effect on Alabama businesses.

On Sunday, after imposing new tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, President Donald Trump suggested that Americans may feel some “pain” in the short term, but that the nation would ultimately benefit from his decision.

“WILL THERE BE SOME PAIN? YES, MAYBE (AND MAYBE NOT!),” Trump said in a social media post. “BUT WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, AND IT WILL ALL BE WORTH THE PRICE THAT MUST BE PAID.”.

On Saturday, Trump finally signed off on threatened 25-percent tariffs on neighboring Mexico and Canada — despite sharing a free trade pact — and hit China with a 10-percent tariff in addition to already enacted levies.
