Alabama lawmaker hopes to end permitless carry [Video]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – After a record-breaking year of homicides in Birmingham, local leaders are not holding back their criticism of Alabama’s gun laws ahead of the legislative session.

Permitless carry was a topic of discussion at a recent crime prevention meeting.

The governor signed the law three years ago. It allows gun owners to carry a concealed handgun without a state permit.

As Rep. Ontario Tillman (D) of Jefferson County heads back to the State House, he wants Alabama’s permitless carry law to be done for.

“Putting forth polices, and supporting polices, to reduce gun violence,” Tillman said. “To get rid of the glock switch. To make sure that we repeal permitless carry, which we should not have gotten rid of in the first place.”

The law, which passed in 2022, was championed by guns rights advocates.
