For many Canadians trying to stay on top of bills and everyday expenses, a refund notice can seem like a welcome surprise. However, scammers are now using group texts to steal personal information, disguising their latest attempt as a well-known online shopping platform.

In this case, Ontario residents are receiving mass group text messages from unfamiliar numbers, claiming a recent Amazon order has triggered a “notable price decrease.” Several other phone numbers are added to the group chat to create a false sense of legitimacy and urgency.

The message instructs recipients to submit a refund request within three days and provides a suspicious shortened link. The message is crafted to sound official and time-sensitive, playing on people’s trust in online shopping platforms and their desire to save money. However, the link does not direct users to the real Amazon site and could expose them to identity fraud.
