BUFFALO, N.Y. — Erie County leaders on Thursday reached a deal to cope with a road salt shortage.
They reached an agreement with Compass Minerals of Kansas City. Starting this weekend, Compass Minerals of Kansas City will send 1,000 tons of salt a day to the Port of Buffalo from their mine in Hamilton, Ontario.
By next week, county leaders expect to have 5,000 tons of rock salt delivered. The deal will cost the county more than $400,000.
Erie County Department of Public Works Commissioner Bill Geary on Wednesday told 2 On Your Side that orders were still being fulfilled, but not in full. The county was also exploring contracting with additional suppliers.
