Amherst Police welcome a cuddly K-9 to its ranks [Video]

A 12-week-old Labrador Retriever was recently added to the police force. But he won’t be sniffing around drug busts, or tracking down suspects at crime scenes.

AMHERST, N.Y. — There’s a new canine on the Amherst Police Department, but it’s not what you might think.

The department recently welcomed Manny, a 12-week-old Labrador Retriever, to its ranks. He won’t be sniffing around drug busts or attempting to track down suspects at crime scenes.

Manny won’t be doing any of that in his official role as community engagement and support canine, essentially serving as an ambassador of goodwill and compassion.

“Once fully trained, Manny will be actively involved in the community, giving citizens plenty of opportunities to meet him and helping to create positive and meaningful connections,” Amherst Police said in a statement, announcing the new position.

Manny will comfort crime victims and provide emotional support to people who need it. He will also be there to comfort anyone in the Amherst Police Department going through emotional or traumatic experiences.
