‘Appreciation, celebration’ important parts of Black History Month in Mississauga: city [Video]

Education, appreciation and celebration are at the core of Mississauga’s efforts over the next four weeks in recognition of Black History Month.

The City of Mississauga will once again host dozens of events, exhibits, tours and other activities to mark the Black community’s many contributions — both locally and further afield.

“Black History Month provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the achievements of Black communities in Mississauga and beyond, listen to their stories and learn more about their history and contributions to Canadian society,” city officials said in a news release on Monday.

Black History Month, which originated in the U.S., is celebrated every February across Canada and south of the border. Several other countries celebrate it in October.

In Mississauga, the city partners each year with the Black Caucus Alliance to recognize accomplishments and shine a spotlight on talented artists, authors, musicians and more who are amplifying local …
