APU celebrates Indigenous Peoples’ Day 2024 [Video]

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Monday is Indigenous Peoples’ Day and there were multiple events across Anchorage to celebrate.

Among the festivities was a gathering at Alaska Pacific University, which hosted its celebration at the Moseley Sports Center honoring Indigenous people of Alaska and the diverse histories and cultures found across the state.

The gathering on Monday included Alaska Native dance performances, a mini Native fashion show, Alaska Native games, and an appearance by Molly of Denali.

“I think it’s just really about coming together,” APU President Janelle Vanasse said. “It’s really about understanding that we need to take a little bit of a pause – all of us in Alaska, both those that are Indigenous, and those of us who are not – to just recognize the contributions and the people who have lived here for so many years.
