HB 2281 would create a missing indigenous person alert system to coordinate alerts following the report of a missing indigenous person.

PHOENIX — More than a hundred people marched outside the Arizona State Capitol Monday urging lawmakers to enact changes to address the issue of missing and murdered indigenous people.

The rally came as investigators work to find the person or people responsible for murdering 14-year-old Emily Pike, a beloved member of the San Carlos Apache tribe.

A 2016 Urban Indian Health Report showed out of 5,700 reports of missing native women and girls, only 116 of those cases were logged in the national missing persons database.

The report stated that  murder was the third leading cause of death among Native women.

Emily Pike’s murder has brought the issue to the forefront in the Valley.
