Armoured van robbery call in eastern Ontario town turns out to be firecracker prank [Video]

A report of an armoured van robbery in progress in the eastern Ontario town of Tweed Tuesday evening turned out to be a false alarm, with police in the Hastings County community warning of the consequences of pranks.

An armoured van was parked outside a bank on Victoria Street at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when “loud bangs” were heard, prompting the crew of the van to take cover and a Tweed resident to call police.

The crew quickly discovered that someone had set off firecrackers nearby.

Police arrived and spoke with the armoured van crew and canvassed the area for witnesses but were unable to find any pranksters that may have been involved. The investigation is continuing.

“What may have seemed like an innocent prank,” said the OPP, “could have resulted in a much more serious incident.”
