A major winter storm is set to hit southern Ontario starting Wednesday, continuing into Thursday morning.

Eastern parts of the province, including the Ottawa area, are expected to receive up to 40 cm of snow.

In Mississauga and Brampton,  less snow is expected, but the storm is still expected to be very impactful.

Both cities are under a snowfall warning from Environment Canada, which says that around 15 cm is expected, with peak snowfall rates of two to four centimetres per hour.

The system will start to impact Mississauga and Brampton late Wednesday afternoon and end Thursday morning, with the heaviest snow expected to fall overnight, the weather agency said.

“This snowfall will impact the evening commute,” Environment Canada warned.

“Snow may become mixed with ice pellets late this evening and overnight for some areas…. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations.”
