The importance of community care transcends country lines.

A documentary filmed in South London highlights the challenges that groups face when attempting to dismantle underlying social problems. Released in 2021, Power to Change shares the stories of Londoners who, when faced with a rise in knife crimes and gun violence, banded together to strive towards a safer environment for their community.

While Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside may not face the same concerns of gun violence, the rising mortality rate due to violent crime combined with drug overdoses shares similarities to London in that community collaboration is needed to overcome these issues.

The DTES Peace Education Program will screen the documentary at Carnegie Community Centre later this month (August 28) to build solidarity and showcase the impact of community care.
