Groups are working to educate the public and strengthen local seafood farming.

BRUNSWICK, Maine — A new coalition is coming together to support Maine’s growing aquaculture industry, aiming to clear up misconceptions and highlight the economic and environmental benefits of seafood farming.

While seafood farming has been around for years, some Maine residents still have reservations on the practice. Chris Burtis, co-founder of Bombazine Oyster Company in Brunswick, experienced skepticism firsthand when launching his oyster farm in 2018.

“First time we decided to do an oyster farm, I didn’t really know what social license was, but it’s become a thing,” Burtis said.

Public hesitation, Burtis says, often comes from a lack of information. He recalled spending 45 minutes on the phone with a concerned community member, explaining the process and easing their fears.

Coalition members believe Maine’s aquaculture industry could become as iconic as lobsters, potatoes, and blueberries.
