It’s not uncommon for Essex County residents to make an intentional effort to help those in need during the holiday.

Steven and Mary Mahovlich, members of the Belle River Lions Club, make it a mission to help any day of the year by loaning much needed medical equipment to anyone, free of charge.

“At this point in time, we have over 40 beds and 125 plus wheelchairs out,” said Mahovlich.

“It comes in at no charge and goes out at no charge.”

Some of that equipment is stored in their personal garage.

“The only request is that when you’re finished with it, you bring it back,” added Mahovlich. “It doesn’t always happen.”

They estimate the project saves some families thousands of dollars every year.

“A hospital bed on loan is roughly $300 a month,” he detailed.

“We’ve had beds out that have been out for years and there’s no charge.”
