A St. James area apartment building has been deemed safe for the return of tenants who were forced out in the spring.

According to the City of Winnipeg, the building at 2440 Portage Avenue – known as Birchwood Terrace – has met the conditions of the Mitigate Unsafe Condition order and has been issued a full occupancy permit. This means tenants can return to the building.

This news comes after 250 residents living in the apartment building were displaced back in May. The city issued an evacuation order when an inspection found severe structural deterioration.

CTV News Winnipeg reached out to the building’s management company to ask if and when tenants can return but has yet to receive a response.
