The Bird River fire remains active, but recent rainfall has provided some relief, according to Matt Kinghorn, fire chief of the Bird River Fire Department and councillor for Ward 4 in the RM of Alexander. In a video update, Kinghorn said crews from Wild Land Services are currently on the scene, pulling in hoses in preparation for further fire suppression efforts.

“They will be working on that tomorrow, which will be Sunday, and hopefully have some air support with it as well,” Kinghorn said.

While the rain over the past 24 hours has significantly dampened the area, Kinghorn says the timeline for allowing residents back into the area remains uncertain.

“As for return to the area, that’s still up in the air. We’re not sure when we’ll be able to allow people or people will be allowed back in,” he said.
