A 14-year-old youth faces public mischief and threatening charges after a Guelph high school was shut down on Monday morning following a bomb threat.

Guelph Police say they were contacted by an administrator at John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute at around 6:15 a.m. The school official told police a threatening email had been received overnight.

The Upper Grand District School Board moved the day’s classes to online and instructed all staff and students to stay away from the school, police said in a news release.

Several police officers subsequently “surrounded the school until an extensive search was completed by members of the tactics and rescue unit with assistance from an Ontario Provincial Police canine unit trained to detect explosives,” police added.

Nothing of concern was located in the school and the building was turned over to school board officials at around 11:30 a.m., according to police.
