A prank by an 11-year-old boy is believed to have shut down an elementary school in Guelph this past Friday, police say.

Guelph Police said they were called to an elementary school in the city’s northeast end around 8:30 a.m. after staff reported the school had received a threatening voicemail overnight.

“Students and staff were evacuated to another nearby school for the day as the investigation unfolded,” police said in a news release on Monday.

Further investigation, police said, determined the phone used to leave the message belonged to a teenager, who said his family had been visiting friends the previous evening.

“While the teen was playing video games, he heard an 11-year-old boy leaving the message from the teen’s phone. The child then asked if it was possible to retrieve and delete the voicemail,” police said.

Officers subsequently spoke to the child and his mother to explain the seriousness …
