A British woman who has lived in Australia for more than a decade is fighting to stay in her “one true home” after learning she will be deported next week.
Belinda Checkley, 36, has been living in Byron Bay for 11 years “working, building friendships, spending time with my community and finding my partner” only to discover all of that would soon be ripped out from underneath her.

Checkley says she has been fighting for years to secure permanent residency – a journey filled with “countless personal, emotional and financial sacrifices” – but learned in December her application had been rejected.
Checkley and her Australian partner now face having to rebuild their lives overseas when her temporary bridging visa expires on Tuesday.
