A British woman who was meant to be deported from Australia this week after living here for more than a decade has been thrown a temporary lifeline to stay in her “one true home”.
Belinda Checkley, 36, has lived in Byron Bay for 11 years “working, building friendships, spending time with my community and finding my partner” only to discover all of that would soon be ripped out from underneath her.

Checkley says she has been fighting for years to secure permanent residency – a journey filled with “countless personal, emotional and financial sacrifices” – but learned in December her application had been rejected.
