Broadband internet on Pelee Island [Video]

Broadband internet has finally come to the island.

Some residents on Pelee Island can now connect for the first time.

Crews laid fibre optic cable from the island to the mainland in September, thanks to nearly $20-million from the federal government’s universal broadband fund.

Previously, residents had to rely on satellite internet or the island’s spotty cellular network.

Mayor Cathy Miller said the stay-at-home orders issued during the pandemic highlighted the problems with unreliable internet service.

Children trying to attend school via video conferencing had to sit in the school parking lot.

Parents also struggled with running small businesses, or doing online banking.
