Some $2.4 billion in purchases were made by Peel Region last year, but American companies are being frozen out of future deals amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s escalating tariffs.
Last week saw Peel Regional Council pass a motion to “reduce the risks associated with tariffs and support local suppliers.”
The move comes as many municipalities including Mississauga and Brampton are blacklisting American companies with a “Made in Canada” campaign, spurred by the 25 per cent U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
There’s also a threatened blanket 25 per cent fee on all Canadian products entering the U.S., and Trump is poised to make an announcement around automobile tariffs on Wednesday.
