Candidates running for city council or mayor in Calgary will be required to provide a criminal record check from the Calgary police when submitting nomination papers.

Council voted on the proposal at its Tuesday meeting, agreeing that prospective candidates are responsible for paying the cost of the Police Information Check (PIC), which needs to be dated no earlier than six months before the nomination submission.

The Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic School District also require criminal record checks.

Nominations for the 2025 Calgary election open Jan. 2 and close at noon, Monday, Sept. 22.

Election day is Monday, Oct. 20.
